چکیده

KIROGLU, A.F., BAYRAKLI, H., YUCA, K., CANKAYA, H. and KIRIS, M. Nasal Obstruction as a Common Side-Effect of Sildenafil Citrate. Tohoku J. Exp. Med., 2006, 208 (3), 251-254 ── Sildenafil citrate is an effective oral drug for erectile dysfunction. The main action of sildenafil is the enhancement of the effect of nitric oxide (NO) by inhibiting the cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP)-specific phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5), an enzyme responsible for degradation of cGMP. NO is also present in the nasal mucosa and is responsible for vasodilation causing congestion and nasal obstruction. The aim of this study was to detect the effect of sildenafil on nasal mucosa in terms of nasal obstruction. A total of 16 patients presented to urology clinic suffering from impotence and medicated with sildenafil were included in the study. Before and after oral administration of 50 mg sildenafil, in all of the patients the nasal patency was examined by active anterior rhinomanometry (a method of assessing nasal resistance) using air pressure of 150 Pascal. In addition, all patients were asked about their sensation of nasal patency to detect the symptomatic nasal obstruction. There was a significant decrease in nasal air flow values (cm/s) (p < 0.05). Except for three cases, all patients indicated that they had the sensation of nasal obstruction after the use of sildenafil (p < 0.05). Nasal obstruction is a common complaint for the patients using Sildenafil. ──── Sildenafil; nasal patency; obstruction; rhinomanometry © 2006 Tohoku University Medical Press

Evaluating the Effect of Endoscopic Sinus Surgery on Laryngeal Mucosa Stroboscopic Features

Introduction: The major presenting symptom of nasal polyps is nasal obstruction. The role of nasal obstruction in the genesis of laryngeal disorders is still unknown.   Materials and Methods: The aim of this study was to evaluate laryngeal videostroboscopic changes after functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) in patients with nasal polyposis. A longitudinal study was carried out from M...

Comparison of Expression of Cytokeratin 7 on Epithelium of Nasal Polyps and Mucosa of Chronic Rhinosinusitis

Background and Objective: Nasal polyp is the most common benign mass of the nasal cavity and it is originated from nasal cavity or sinuses. Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filament proteins that provide mechanical support in epithelial cells. The purpose of this study was to compare the expression of cytokeratin 7 in epithelium of nasal polyps and nasal mucosa in chronic rhinosinusitis. Mate...

Attenuation of Cold Restraint Stress-Induced Gastric Lesions by Sildenafil in Rats

Aim: To investigate the protective effect of sildenafil citrate, a selective inhibitor of cyclic guanosine monophosphate-specific phosphodiesterase, on gastric mucosal damage induced by cold restraint stress (CRS) in rats. Further, the study was extended to investigate some possible mechanisms underlying this effect. Material and Methods: Forty rats were randomly divided into 4 groups. Normal c...

The Fungi Flora of Healthy Nasal Mucosa in Kerman, Iran

Introduction: Environmental fungi, molds and yeasts, can infest the nasal cavity through inhaled air. There is some evidence that they could be the main cause of Chronic Rhinosinusitis (CRS) but little is known about the normal fungal flora in the human nose. The objective of this study was to assess the normal fungal flora of the nasal mucus in adults in Kerman. Materials and Methods: We ...

Inhaled phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors restore chloride transport in cystic fibrosis mice.

Sildenafil and vardenafil, two selective inhibitors of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) are able, when applied by intraperitoneal injection, to activate chloride transport in cystic fibrosis (CF) mice homozygous for the F508del mutation. Oral treatment with the drugs may be associated with adverse haemodynamic effects. We hypothesised that inhaled PDE5 inhibitors are able to restore ion transpor...
